1:1 Intro Coaching Session with Lina

I was sitting at a doctor’s office and filling in a questionnaire about whether I felt anxious, stressed, depressed, suffered low mood, or insomnia in the past 14 days. I couldn’t help but start laughing when I had to check every single box in the questionnaire. In fact, if the questionnaire had questions about whether I felt embarrassed, guilty, ashamed, angry, and cranky, I would have checked those boxes too.

We all feel hundreds of emotions per day. Some are short and fleeting - we barely register them before they have gone. 

But some are overwhelming, intense, and often do contribute to stress, insomnia, and other issues. Importantly, some emotions can bring destruction in our lives - uncontrolled anger destroys our relationships with our friends and partners. Our inability to hold back tears or not showing fear undermines our careers. Our low moods bring only low energy and suck any joy from life. 

I've been there. I  have lost relationships because I couldn’t control my anger. I have cried in front of bossies when I really shouldn’t have. I have had panic attacks and hyperventilated in the toilets before meetings. 

Until I decided that that is enough. 

..And tried all the wrong strategies. 

I numbed my emotions to the point of not feeling or caring about anything. I avoided high-intensity emotions as if my life depended on it sometimes, often taking jobs or tasks that were way under my capability. I tried controlling them, usually, ending up hyperventilating about them later. 

After years of trying the wrong things, I found the emotional intelligence framework. This is where I found out some reasons behind why so many of the strategies fail. 

..I stopped fighting my emotions and instead embraced them, validated them, and listened to them.. 

..I stopped getting upset about trivial things and learned to let go of many things that were not worth my time or attention..

..I stopped using emotional management techniques that were slowly destroying me..

..I started managing my emotions proactively and learned what matters to me and how to express my emotions in healthier, more appropriate ways.. 

..I learned to set appropriate boundaries so that I would be protected that reduced by defensiveness and overreaction because people knew them better.. 

..I started getting more energy and enthusiasm in my life because I stopped fighting with my emotions, but instead used them to my benefit..
